Joy Crookes Plays a Checkmate in Music Video 'Trouble'

Darkroom director Nono directs Joy Crookes music video ‘Trouble’ for Partizan.

From Nono: “This film is about having arguments with the people that you love. I found it really cool to use the game of chess as a metaphor to convey these ‘fights’. Joy and her opponent in the discussion are transformed into chess pieces and in chess you need to use strategy to win and this is the case in verbal conflicts as well. The armour and sword were really useful as metaphors too in the form of attacking and defending in these “fights”. They move through the chess board until Joy wins the argument... Checkmate!

This is my second experience working with Joy [a!er their first collaboration on ‘Skin’], and it was just as fantastic as the first one. I really admire her as an artist, but also how determined and hard working she is as an artist and performer. She even bruised her hand with one of the sword shots but she really wanted to keep shooting and deliver an amazing performance.

I was surrounded by an amazing crew, who helped me so much to bring my vision to life. From Partizan ́s producers to DoP Olan Collardy and colourist Richard Fearon. Everybody put a lot of themselves in this video and I am really grateful for that. And also to Kat Cattaneo, it is always a pleasure working with her.”
