Joya Mooi Faces up to Imperfections in Hazy 'Bitter Parts' Video
The pensive track sees Joya face up to her imperfections and learn how to accept her flaws. With a mellow trap beat laying the foundation for Joya’s reflective lyrics, ‘Bitter Parts’ is drenched in soul and perfectly captures her sound which draws influence from hip-hop, jazz and R&B.
Speaking on the release, Joya explains: “Bitter Parts is about coming to terms with the less pleasant parts of yourself. The song plays with denial of this, at times I ignore the ‘mirror’ or I suggest means to reduce the confrontation with myself. I think I’ve accepted that I’m not always going to be the perfect self for myself, but I think I can now take a closer look at the imperfections”.
The accompanied music video is made by the Czar Amsterdam’s versatile director Michael Middelkoop, explaining the concept: “I wanted to explore the song’s themes by creating this infinite, unavoidable reflection of Joya. An all-seeing eye in an all-seeing room, that puts all beautiful and bitter parts on full display”.The song, produced by Sim Fane, ‘Bitter Parts’ forms part of an upcoming EP release for Joya, and builds on her burgeoning body of work which regularly explores subjects of relationships, identity and belonging – often drawing inspiration from her roots in South Africa. She releases her well-acclaimed debut album ‘The Ease of Others’ last year and continues to prove her ability to deliver beautiful intricate R&B that’s also deeply personal. A captivating artist that oozes soul, Joya Mooi is an exciting artist to watch in 2020.
